The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World
Today I am going to make my blog post a little bit different and write about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:
Wonder 1: The Great Pyramid at Giza
Completed around 2560 BC the pyramid took 20 years to make and is believed to be the tomb of pharoah Khufu. It is part of a complex of buildings, including pyramids for Khufu's wives.
Wonder 2: Hanging Garden of Babylon
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon wee supposed to have been built in 600BC by Nebuchadnezzar II, although it is uncertain as to whether they actually existed. The word hanging refers to overhanging terraces or balconies.
Wonder 3: Statue of Zeus
This statue was made around 435 BC and was situated in the aisle of a temple at Olympus. It was made of ivory and coated in gold and was seated on a throne of cedarwood. It was destroyed, either with the temples destruction or later on at Constantinople.
Wonder 4: Temple of Artemis
This temple at Ephesus was built in 550BC to Artemis, the virginal huntress. In 356 BC it was destroyed in what was apparently an act of arson designed to gain fame at any cost.
Wonder 5: Mausoleum of Maussollos
This was a tomb built for Mausolus, a Persian provincial king, at Halicarnassus. It was completed by 350BC and a few hundred years later was destroyed by earthquakes.
Wonder 6: Colossus of Rhodes
This was a giant statue of the god Helios, built on the island of Rhodes between 292 BC and 280 BC to celebrate the fact that Rhodes had withstood a siege. The statue was destroyed by an earthquake in 224 BC.
Wonder 7: Lighthouse of Alexandria
Built in the 3rd century BC on the island of Pharos, but was not used as a lighthouse until 1 AD when fire and a mirror was used to create light. It was destroyed by earthquakes in the 14th century and some remains have been found in the surrounding waters.
These wonders really make you think about the past, so if you're interested then look into them more (or request a further article).
