The Boxer Rebellion: Part 1
Today's post is going to be about the Boxer Rebellion in China. Today I will introduce the situation and tomorrow I will detail how it ends.
The background
Following 1840 European powers began to exercise much power in China, often being advantaged over the native Chinese. This angered many Chinese and increasingly tension was high. One group, the Boxers, began extremely vocal opposition to this.
How did it progress?
The Boxers initially opposed both the foreign powers and the ruling Qing Dynasty. However, after a failed campaign against the government they focused purely on the foreign powers, eventually besieging the compounds of their representatives. Open war was declared between the European powers and China.
Tomorrow I will deal with how the war progressed.
