The Battle of Trafalgar
Today's post is going to be a brief outline of the the Battle of Trafalgar which was a naval battle between Britain and France that too place in 1805. The British were led by Admiral Nelson, who died in the battle.
The Background
The battle was part of the Napoleonic Wars and after a British blockade of French ports Napoleon decided to invade Britain. However, to do so he first needed to gain control of the English Channel by destroying the British fleet.
The Battle
On the day of the battle calm weather meant the British had warning of the French advance. Outnumbered, the British fleet sailed out of the normal battle formations and when they finally reached the French ships they engaged in hand to hand combat. Nelson was killed in the battle in which 22 French ships and no British ones, were captured.
The Results
The battle left the British navy superior and forced Napoleon to institute the Continental Blockade to try and deny Britain access to the continent for trade. It ensured Britain's safety in the Napoleonic wars.
