The Spanish Reconquista

I am going to write a series of blogs on the reconquista in Spain, which was the period where the Christian Spanish kingdoms began to conquer the Muslim states of the same area. It's a period of history that interests me because of the fragmented kingdoms and the mix of the two cultures.

Todays post is going to be a brief introduction to the period.

The reconquista

The reconquista was the period where the Christian Spanish kingdoms conquered the Muslim ones. However, during this period there were also a number of Muslim kingdoms which put up strong resistance, and, at times, managed to reclaim lost, or new, territory. The last muslim kingdom was not completely claimed until 1492.

The Muslim entry to the Iberian Peninsular

The Muslim states were based on the Iberian peninsular, which they conquered in 711, when it was in the hands of the Visigoth. This invasion took place when a Visigoth noble helped the Muslim invasion in order to ensure the Visigoth king lost the lands. Their advance was halted around the Pyrenees.

So...

So every now and then I am going to write a post about this part of Spain's history.
