Pizza & Its History
Well, the only thing I can say about Pizza is that I love it !! Slurrrp...
Now about it's history.....
Bread has been prepared by men from ages. And often it was flavoured, to make it a more wholesome and thrifty meal !
Persian soldiers around 500 B.C. were known to cook a flat bread on their shields and put dates and cheese on them.
In 1st Century BC Virgil has written,
Their homely fare dispatch’d, the hungry band
Invade their trenchers next, and soon devour,
To mend the scanty meal, their cakes of flour.
Ascanius this observ’d, and smiling said:
“See, we devour the plates on which we fed.”
Often in history pizza has been considered as 'eating the plate', which is a very unique way for me to see the pizza, after having eaten it in a plate !!
In 18th Century it became a common dish for the poor to eat in Naples. It then reached the royalty.
In 1889 a baker by the name Raffael baked pizzas for visiting King and Queen of Savoy, which were greatly appreciated and praised! The Queen's favourite had basil (green), mozarella (white) and tomatos (red) bringing the colours of the Italian flag on the pizza. This was since then called the Margherita Pizza after the Queen.
Chia : Cause the Queens name was Margherita !
There is another less popular story about the origin of Pizzas but it has been widely dismissed as false.
The chinese believed that Pizza came to Europe from Marco Polo who missed the green onion pancakes of China.
It seems Marco Polo asked a chef to make him some of these pancakes after he returned from China and since the chef could'nt do so, they tried to make it by keeping the ingredients on top of the bread. And this resulted in a pizza which soon became very popular !
The pizza found its way to America in latter half of the 19th century, initially it was often referred to as the Tomato Pie.
