Mutiny on the Bounty
Today I am going to write about the mutiny on the Bounty, a British royal navy ship.
The Background
The HMAV Bounty was outfitted to travel to Tahiti and transport breadfruit plants to the West Indies as part of an experiment to see if they could be used as a cheap source of food for slaves. The journey to Tahiti took 10 months due to bad weather, but the mutiny did not strike until the return journey.
The Mutiny
Fletcher Christian, a crew member, entered the cabin of Bligh, the captain, on April 28, 1789. Despite heated words the mutinee was bloodless and Bligh, along with 18 other crew men, was sent off in a 7m launch boat.
What followed...
Bligh managed to navigate with only a pocket watch and a sextant and lead the remaining crew to safety.
Meanwhile, the mutineers sailed from island to island, never quite settling. When Bligh reported the mutiny, the HMS Pandora wemt searching for the mutineers and found some, who had settled in Tahiti. Three of these were hanged. Years later it was found that the other crewmen had settled on Pitcairn Island and most had died since then.
And that's it for today,
