More about Cats...
The first associations of cats with humans may have begun toward the end of the Stone Age. It took many centuries, for the cat to become established as a domestic animal.
It was first adopted by Egypt about 5000 years ago. Its usefulness in killing mice and rodents was such that it was soon protected and considered sacred. This is thought to be the origin of their Cat God Bastet a female figurine with a cats head! This Goddess is considered to be the most worshiped of all gods and godesses.
Soon the cat spread from here to Greek and Rome, and then to the asian countries.
In the middle ages the cat became associated with the Devil in Europe. This was the time when witch hunting was prominent, often cats and their owners were killed as evil. There were also occasions when hundreds of cats were buried alive in a celebration. This extermination of cat population led to increase in rodent and vermin in the region, which soon led to plague and other diseases.
However by the 18th century cats were again the favourite pets in US and Europe. Superstitions still hang around though, a black cat crossing the road bring bad luck, Seeing a white cat at night is bad luck and such. Cats are still associated with magic eg Salem from Sabrina the teenage witch.
In Japan cats are venerated after death, the temple Go-To-Ku-Ji is dedicated to them!
This is also where the Bonsai Cat Tradition came about.
The Bonsai cat is like a horrible abomination where a kitten is put into a bottle when really small so it grows inside the bottle, it breathes through a hole and is fed through a hole but does not poop because its anul outlet has been blocked before being put into the bottle for convenience reasons. It is called tradtional Japanese Art but its the same as burning a cat and then calling it traditional European Art (which thankfully is not happening!!).
I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals. - Winston Churchill
When I play with my cat, how do I know that she is not passing time with me rather than I with her? - Montaigne
Chia: So where does Cat Woman come in??
Well Cat Woman is another example of how cats are associated with magic and supernatural power like bats (bats and vampires; cats and witches)!
