Taj Mahal

I just created a category where we will be looking at the history behind many of the great monuments on our planet.
Taj Mahal

This beautiful monument is probably the prettiest tombs made in history!
The Mughal King of India Shah Jahan promised to make the most beautiful maesoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal as she lay on her death bed. Made completely from white marble by 22,000 labourers and 1000 elephants stands in Agra, India as a testimonial for the love this king bore for his wife.

Stories go that after the Taj Mahal was constructed Shah Jahan chopped of the hands of the architect so another one of its like and calibre cannot be made again.
A part of the Mahal (meaning Palace in Urdu) is covered with the verses of Koran which is calligraphically written Tulluth Script and embedded in the marble with Jasper. Other ornamentation includes carvings of lotuses and vines.

This monument has a mosque, rest house, gardens and the tombs as a part of it.
The mosque is situated at its western end, and is made of red sandstone. It faces the holy sity of mecca.

The gardens are typically persian in style. They are geometrically designed without any attempt towards a natural look.
Shah Jahan was also entombed next to his wife, in the Taj Mahal.
