Mexican-American War
Todays post is on the Mexican-American war.
Background
When Texas, part of the old Mexican state, joined the Unites States Mexico saw this as an enroachment on its rights.
As part of it's attempts to keep territories on the American continent from British control the United States then offered to buy California and New Mexico, both parts of Mexican territory, from the Mexican government. The Mexicans rejected this proposal.
Both states were now angered by the actions of the other and the US sent troops to occupy land claimed by both Mexico and Texas.
Mexico responded by preparing for war.
The War
The Mexicans advanced into the disputed territory with a force of 2000 men and marched on the US's Fort Brown.
As a US force of 2 400 marched to relieve the fort they were attacked by a Mexican army of 2 400 troops. At the Battle of Resaca de la Palma American troops were victorious. Following this the US officially declared war.
The US sent three armies into Mexican territory: one seized control of various areas of California, although it faced local rebellions at some points, another force invaded New Mexico and upon establishing control it marched on to California to help pacify the Mexian troops and militias.
Once they entered Mexico the US armies faced strong resistance, but succeeded in capturing a number of key cities. When a new US force was sent by sea to Mexico the Americans rapidly established control and eventually the Battle of Chapultepec enabled a US occupation of Mexico City.
The Treaty
The Treaty of Guadalup Hidalgo was signed in February of 1848, which gave the US control of huge amounts of Mexican territory, in return for more than 18 million dollars.
Hmm...
When I do a three part post I'm itching to get on to the next topic, but when I do a one part post it's always so crammed. A mathematician would probably tell me I should do more 2 day posts.
Oh well,
Adam
