Today's post is going to be about the Los Angeles Riots. These took place in 1992, following the acquital of the police who beat Rodney King.
Causes
The riots were caused by a number of long term and short term factors. The most obvious of these was the acquital of the police who beat Rodney King, a black man.
However, alongside all this there were other forms of racial tension that contributed to the riots. For example, there was tension between black groups and hispanic and asian groups as they competed for jobs.
The Riots
The riots took place over about six days. They started after the Rodney King verdict was returned and involved large gangs looting and attacking people within the city.
In response the national guard, US military and LAPD acted to control the rioters, although for the first few days only the LAPD were involved.
As more troops were brought in and an inquiry into the Rodney King affair was promised the riots became much calmer and eventually petered out, with the official end coming as Mayor Bradley lifted a curfew that had been in affect since the riots began.
