Julius Caesar biography: part 2
Gaul
Caesar became senior Consul in 60BC and gained valuable allies in Pompey and Crassus, these three became the first triumvirate. Following this he became Proconsular Governor of Transalpine Gaul, and he used this position to conquer the remained of modern France. In 55BC Pompey and Crssus were elected Consuls and made Caesar proconsul for five more years. However, in 53BC Crassus died and Pompey turned against Caesar.
Civil War
When Caesar was recalled to Rome in 50BC he was forbidden to stand again as consul. In response he returned with an army, and was thus accused of treason. However, he took Rome and was appointed dictator, although he retired from this position and was made consul after eleven days.
Cleopatra and end of opposition
Caesar pursued Pompey, who had fled, and upon finding him dead by Ptolemy XIII’s hand he supported Cleopatra in her civil war against Ptolemy. He won the battle, installed Cleopatra as ruler and fathered a son to her. Despite this they never married.
Following this he hunted down the last opposition to his rule.
Towards the end
Caesar returned to Rome and made his will, passing everything down to Ocatavian and then Brutus. He accepted the title of dictator and gradually took on more powers, beginning to appoint the previously elected Consuls, among other things. However, he also did much good, clamping down on corruption and rewarding war veterans as well as helping the poor.
In the end he was tricked into meeting with the senate to discuss a bill, but this was a trap organised by Brutus. The senators fell upon Caesar and stabbed him to death.
His last words were (disputably), “You also, Brutus, my son?"
