Hitler Biography: Part 2
When I started this article I aimed to summarise Hitler's life in one short article, but now I realise that even to get it over three articles is going to require significant summarising, which means some important things get left out. Next time I think I'll just focus on one stage of a persons life.
Still, here goes:
Political turmoil and Hitler's continued rise
After the 1930 elections Hitler, through the Nazi party controlled 107 seats in the Reichstag. In 1932 Hitler then ran against the president and while he lost it became very obvious that he stood a chance of gaining power.
Political turmoil meant that a number of elections took place at this time and these left the Nazi's as the largest party in the Reichstag.
Papen, the Chancellor asked for the dissolvement of the reichstag as he could not reach any consensus with and requested that elections be indefinately postponed. A lack of military support meant that Hindenburg, the president, refused this request and dismissed Papen.
Schleicher, his replacement went the same way and finally Hitler was appointed to lead a coalition government. He then stopped any attempts to allow the government to gain a majority, forcing elections. However, despite gaining 43% of the vote the Nazi's still had to form a coalition.
Hitler's Consolidation of Power
Hitler then pushed through the enabling act, which gave the cabinet power for four years. The party now suppressed its opposition.
In 1934 the president died and the cabinet passed his powers to Hitler. This gave him control of the military as well as other powers.
The Third Reich
Rearmament and a more traditional view of women decreased unemployment (as men gained women's jobs as they were sent home) and boosted the economy.
In 1935 Hitler introduced conscription (which went against the Treaty of Versailles) and built up a huge army. He then seized the Rhineland
He began to form a military alliance called the Axis.
The Jews
Even before World War II Hitler began to repress the Jews, taking their citizenship and forcing upon them distinguishing marks like the yellow star. On the Night of the Broken Glass Jewish businesses and synagogues were attacked.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow I'll be talking about Hitler during World War II and then I will choose a more specific topic so I can write in more detail, rather than having to jump so quickly from topic to topic.
