Guy Fawkes and the Gunpower plot
I recently saw V for Vendetta and realised that I actually know very little about the Gunpowder Plot. In fact, after watching V for Vendetta and hearing this verse:
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
gunpowder, treason and plot,
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot.
I will admit, I forgot what I learnt as a child and imagined that the 5th was celebrated as a homage to the rebels attempts.
Stupid me.
Of course, the verse continues:
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'twas his intent
to blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below,
Poor old England to overthrow:
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, make the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
Hip hip hoorah!
Which changes the intent quite a bit. So now, I'll provide a bit more detail on what the plot was actually about:
Overview:
Traditionally England has managed to have great internal conflict between the catholic and protestant elements. While this has calmed down now (a little), there was a particularly rough period of english history where a number of killings or attempted killings took place.
The Gunpower Plot was one of these, being an attempt to kill James I during a visit to parliament.
The Plot:
A group of plotters includng Guy Fawkes rented a house near parliament and planned to tunnel under the building. Upon learning of a vacated cellar under the house they changed their plans, rented this and snuck in 1 800 pounds of gunpowder, enough to obliterate much of the houses.
The Failure:
At this time an anonymous letter was sent to a lord suggesting he avoid parliament on a certain day and this lord warned the secretary of state who ordered a search of the cellars. Fawkes was found possessing incriminating items and he admitted to the plot.
Fawkes was then tortured by permission of the monarch. The other conspirators fled and many were caught, with the remaining ones making a stand, where theywwre captured or killed.
The Trial:
A one day trial was held and the verdict of this was known from the beginning. Many of the conspirators were then hanged, drawn and quartered.
The plot failed.
