Green Day: A History
Well today I've decided to do some less traditional history once again and do a band history. Tomorrow will be a return to the more usual style with an entry on World War II.
Until then, here is a history of the band Green Day:
The Beginning:
All three final final Green Day members played in other bands at early ages: Tre Cool played with the Lookouts at the age of 12 and Billy Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt played together from 14.
In 1989 John Kiffmeyer, a friend of Armstrong, joined and they formed Green day. They were soon signed by an independent label, Lookout! Records and under them they released a number of EP's and did a national tour. At the end of this Kiffmeyer left and Tre Cool began playing with Green Day.
Following this they toured Europe.
Dookie:
Green Day then signed with Reprise Records and released their first major label album, Dookie. This was a huge commercial success.
While touring for the album they also played Lollapalooza and Woodstock 1994 and became involved in a mudfight with the audience. The tour greatly increased the bands popularity.
Insomniac and Nimrod:
Their next album was Insomniac, which performed no where near as well as Dookie. This was followed by Nimrod which featured Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). This is probably Green Day's best known song. However, Nimrod still dissapointed in terms of album sales.
Warning
A two year break followed from here with the trio wanting to relax. However, in 2000 they came back with Warning. This album was greeted with a mixed response and sold badly, despite containing the popular song Minority.
From the last few albums it seemed like Green Day would never again reach the heights of Dookie.
American Idiot:
After the master tape of Green Day's next album was stolen 20 tracks in Green Day decided to start again with a totally new album.
American Idiot was released in 2004 and hit number one on the charts, winning Best Rock Album in the Grammy Awards and receiving a huge range of critical acclaim. Touring for this album only strengthened its reception.
Following the release of this album the members of Green Day also revamped their image. They took to wearing mainly black clothes, wearing eyelines and keeping their hair either black or white.
Well, love it or hate it that's my history for today. So enjoy yourself and see you again
