Today I'm going to start a biography of George Washington. This post will lead up to the American revolution, which I will deal with tomorrow.
I thought I would venture into another three part post, although I'm not entirely sure whether I will regret this or not as I like doing different things each day. Still, here goes:
Introduction
Washington was born on the 22nd of February , 1732 and grew up in a well off family. However, the death of his father meant that he was not able to be educated in England or accept a position in the royal navy.
French and Indian War
Washington became a member of the Virginian militia and in 1753 he was sent to Ohio County to demand the French withdrawal from territories claimed by Virginia.
The French ignored this and so a year later Washington returned, ambushing a scouting party and establishing Fort Necessity. However, a large French and Indian army approached and Washington was forced to surrender, agreeing to avoid Ohio County for a year.
A year later a campaign to reclaim this saw Washington as the aid to General Braddock. While the campaign failed miserably Washington ensured an organised retreat and acted well under the pressure of battle.
Following this he remained in the militia for 7 years and in 1758 he helped capture Fort Duquesne from the French. However, in 1759 he resigned his commission, married Martha Custis and returned to Mount Vernon where he helped raised Martha's children from a previous marriage (she was a widow).
This peace was not to last though, as soon the American Civil War began.
