George Washington: Biography Part 3

Washington's influence on the presidency

George Washington's election to the presidency was unanimous, and his time in office set the precedent for later practices such as regular meetings between the president and cabinet as a group and the idea of only remaining in office for two terms which was a custom established by Washington (which became law in the 1940's).

Washington desired America to remain out of European politics and in this sphere he was also well regarded with no new European treaties being signed until World War II.

The main area that Washington did not influence was party politics. Washington avoided joining any political party and believed these to be unsuitable for the American democracy. However, the party system has still taken hold.

Presidential Highlights

In 1794, when people protested against federal policies, Washington called up militias and personally led them to put down this rebellion. This established the government as serious about remaining in control of a united country.

In November of the same year Washington helped create the Jay Treaty, which established peace with Britain and helped determine the two countries relationships following American independence.

The shape of his presidency

Washington showed no real desire to be president and he was pushed into a second term somewhat grudgingly. However, once there, he tried to present it as a position meant to serve the people and congress and at all points refused to take too much power or prestige for himself.

Post presidency

In 1797 Washington retired and established a distillery at his house at Mount Vernon. Soon after this he was given the highest military rank of the times, that of Lieutenant General. In 1799 Washington died, after contacting a fever and cold, which turned into pneumonia. It is believed he may have died due to the treatment of bleeding (shock from the loss of blood) or epiglottis, which constricts the throat.

Well there you go. My biography on Washington stands complete and it remained a mystery what I will do tomorrow.
