Chia : History of What??!!
Hmmmphh.... now let me introduce you to Chia... the bugging questioner.
Since I have a habit of rambling on... this bug Chia will help me be more clear by asking relevant questions (or questions that I think are relevant).
So... where were we....
Chia : History of WHAT!!!
Oh yes ofcourse!!
Well 'What' has its origin in Proto-Germanic from which all german languages and English is said to have originated.
The Gothic variant was "hva".
Probably it was first used as a sound made by someone who couldn't understand the other guy, meaning to say 'what did you say'.
eg: Chia: oh me gods...
I : Hva..... Chia I can't hear you..... Hva??
This might be true because the frst civilized uses of the word WHAT is recorded from c.1300, and it was used mainly as 'what did you say'.
By 1785 it became an interogative expletive.
In 1697 the term 'whats-his-name' came into usage meaning a nameless person.
"Whats Up?" was first recorded in 1881.
