Cleopatra: Part 1

For the next few days I’m going to write a biography of Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt who is famous for her liaison with Caesar and later with Mark Anthony.

Beginnings of Rule

Cleopatra was only 18 when her father died and she ascended the throne alongside her brother, Ptolemy XIII. She then married her brother to consolidate her power.

However, Cleopatra began to attempt to establish sole rule and established a great deal of independent power. However, a group of courtiers removed her from power, possibly uncomfortable with a female ruler. She was soon forced to flee Egypt.

Ptolemy’s fall

This situation turned around when Ptolemy had Pompey, who was fleeing from Caesar, killed. Caesar however mourned the loss of Pompey and turned against Ptolemy. He invaded Egypt and installed himself as the arbiter between Ptolemy and Cleopatra. He then installed Cleopatra as ruler, alongside another brother Ptolemy XIV.

Tomorrow I am going to deal with the rest of Cleopatra's life,

Adam
