The eighteen century in philosophy
As part of the Age of Reason, the move away from a reliance on tradition and towards the use of rationality in discovering the truth about the world, the eighteen century saw some interesting trends in western philosophy.
Piety
This was a period both of great piety, and great attacks on religion and its agent on Earth, the church. The philosophy of this time saw great battles rage between those who supported and those who opposed Christianity. This debate also encompassed the debate between Catholicism and Protestantism.
Social Contract
The link between citizens and their rulers was an issue that received a great deal of attention in this period, with some philosophers supporting monarchs with absolute power, and others opposing this.
Mathematics
This period also saw the development and use of both algebra and geometry by the philosophers.
