A Biography of Hitler: Part 1
Well I promised a more serious history today and here it is. A brief biography of Adolf Hitler's rise to power (It may be brief, but I don't have the energy to do his whole life in one day...I will do his life in power another day.
Early Years
Hitler was born in 1889 in Austria and performed well in school for the first few years. However, after this his performance declined and he ended up leaving school at 16 with no qualifications.
Hitler desired to be a painter, but was rejected twice by the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and instead lived off a pension and support from his mother from 1905.
By 1910 he was running out of money and settled in a charity house for the poor. At this time he also became anti-semitic.
In 1913, with a new inheritance from his father, Hitler moved to Munich.
In August 1914 he entered the army.
World War I
Hitler acted as a messenger in the army and was exposed to enemy fire in this time. He was decorated for his duties in this role. In 1916 he was wounded, but soon returned to the front.
During the war Hitler became extremely patriotic and was upset by Germany's capitulation, seeing it as a betrayal by the leaders.
Between the Wars
Hitler remained in the army, where he joined a group of soldiers who aimed to law blame for Germany's war loss on the Jews. He was appointed as a spy and was ordered to infiltrate the Geman Workers'Party. In 1920 he left the army to pursue his interest in the political party and acted as a speaker for them, railing against the Treaty of Versailles and Jews.
When he became the most prominent member of the party he threatened to quit if he was not given dictatorial powers. Growing in influence Hitler decided to try to gain power, by forming an alliance with Kahr, a Bavarian politician and the military. However, these allies then turned against him and halted the uprising.
Hitler was arrested. At his trial he received more support when he made nationalistic statements, but was jailed. In jail he wrote Mein Kampf and communicated with party members, until his release in 1924.
Once released he began to pursue a legal path to power
1930
In 1930 the great depression hit Germany and in September elections were held. The Nazi party gained 18.3% of the vote and became the second largest party in Europe.
This was the beginning of Hitler's rise to power.
Tomorrow I will write part 2 of my post on Hitler and the final part will come the day after. Then I am planning to write about a none war related topic...
Tune in,
Adam
